How they differ

1. 먼저: ahead of others. Only 먼저 compares the order of two people or events: 저보다 먼저 왔어요 (came before me) ○ / 저보다 우선 왔어요 ✕. Everyday phrases: 먼저 가세요 (go ahead), 먼저 실례하겠습니다 (excuse me for leaving first).

2. 우선: priority. 우선 says “this comes first in importance”: 우선 급한 일부터 합시다 (let’s do the urgent work first). It is also a noun, which 먼저 and 일단 are not: 건강이 우선이에요 (health comes first), 우선순위 (priorities).

3. 일단: for now / once. 일단 is a temporary step: 일단 이렇게 하고 나중에 다시 이야기해요 (let’s do it this way for now and talk later). With -(으)면 it means “once”: 일단 시작하면 끝까지 해요 (once I start, I finish) ○ / 먼저 시작하면 ✕ in this meaning.

4. Where they overlap. At the start of a sequence, all three can work: 먼저 / 우선 / 일단 밥부터 먹자 (let’s eat first). 먼저 stresses order, 우선 priority, 일단 “let’s just do this and see”. The English trap: “first” doesn’t tell you which one; ask “before whom?”, “most important?” or “for now?”.
