When to use it

The vowel follows the -아요/어요 rule: 받아 마땅하다, 칭찬받아 마땅하다, 물러나 마땅하다.

The verb is very often passive — 비난받다, 칭찬받다, 처벌받다, 존중받다. You are saying the subject deserves what is being done to it.

Both directions work: 비난받아 마땅한 행동 condemns, 칭찬받아 마땅한 성과 praises. The judgement is what matters, not its sign.

The register is that of editorials and formal argument. 마땅히 as a bare adverb also works: 마땅히 책임져야 한다.

1. 그런 행동은 비난받아 마땅합니다.

   Such conduct deserves to be condemned.

2. 오랜 노력의 결과이니 칭찬받아 마땅하다.

   It is the fruit of long effort and deserves praise.

3. 책임이 있는 사람은 물러나 마땅하다.

   Those responsible ought properly to step down.

4. 비난받아 마땅한 결정이었다고 본다.

   I regard it as a decision that deserved criticism.

5. 손수 만든 정성은 존중받아 마땅합니다.

   The care that goes into handmade work deserves respect.

6. 잘못이 드러난 이상 마땅히 책임져야 한다.

   Now that the fault is exposed, responsibility must properly be taken.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 만하다

  만하다 says something is worth doing; 마땅하다 says it is deserved. Worth versus desert.

  칭찬할 만해요. (worth praising)  /  칭찬받아 마땅하다. (deserves praise)

• -(으)ㄹ 법도 하다

  법도 하다 extends sympathy — one could understand it; 마땅하다 passes judgement — it is proper.

  화가 날 법도 하다. (understandable)  /  비난받아 마땅하다. (deserved)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 법이다

  법이다 states how things naturally are; 마땅하다 states how they ought to be. Description versus prescription.

  노력하면 되는 법이다. (that’s how it works)  /  칭찬받아 마땅하다. (that’s what’s right)

Watch out

• 그 영화는 봐 마땅합니다.

  그 영화는 볼 만합니다.

  마땅하다 is about desert, not worth. For a recommendation, 만하다 is right.

• 비난받아 마땅하고 행동이었다.

  비난받아 마땅한 행동이었다.

  Modifying a following noun requires 마땅한.

• 야, 걔 비난받아 마땅해.

  야, 걔 그런 소리 들어도 싸.

  마땅하다 is editorial language. In conversation, plainer wording is natural.
