When to use it

It attaches to a noun with 에 — no vowel rule to worry about. The modifier form is 힘입은.

The noun must name something favourable: 응원, 지원, 인기, 호평, 성원, 수요. A hardship cannot be drawn strength from.

The second clause reports a good outcome: 팬들의 응원에 힘입어 좋은 성적을 거뒀다.

The register is that of press releases and reports. It is the positive counterpart of -(으)로 인해, which is neutral-to-negative.

1. 팬들의 응원에 힘입어 좋은 성적을 거뒀습니다.

   Buoyed by the fans’ support, they turned in a fine performance.

2. 정부 지원에 힘입어 사업이 본궤도에 올랐다.

   Thanks to government backing, the venture got properly under way.

3. 해외 수요에 힘입어 매출이 크게 늘었다.

   On the back of overseas demand, sales rose sharply.

4. 초반 호평에 힘입은 흥행이었다.

   It was a success built on early good notices.

5. 직접 만든다는 입소문에 힘입어 주문이 밀려들었다.

   Word that they make it themselves brought orders flooding in.

6. 주변의 성원에 힘입어 여기까지 왔습니다.

   With everyone’s encouragement, we have come this far.

Compared with

• -(으)로 인해

  인해 states a cause neutrally and usually a bad one; 힘입어 credits a favourable force for a good outcome.

  사고로 인해 지연됐다. (delayed by an accident)  /  지원에 힘입어 성장했다. (grew on the back of support)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에

  Both credit something favourable. 덕분에 is personal and warm — thanks to you; 힘입어 is institutional and belongs in a report.

  도와주신 덕분에 잘 끝냈어요. (speech)  /  지원에 힘입어 성장했다. (report)

• -에 달려 있다

  달려 있다 says an outcome depends on something still open; 힘입어 credits something that already helped.

  노력에 달려 있다. (depends on effort)  /  응원에 힘입어 이겼다. (won thanks to support)

Watch out

• 사고에 힘입어 일정이 지연되었다.

  사고로 인해 일정이 지연되었다.

  힘입다 means drawing strength from something. A misfortune takes -(으)로 인해.

• 응원에 힘입어 결국 실패했다.

  응원에도 불구하고 결국 실패했다.

  The construction credits a favourable force for a good result. A failure needs a concessive instead.

• 인기에 힘입어 성장이었다.

  인기에 힘입은 성장이었다.

  Modifying a following noun requires 힘입은, not 힘입어.
