-아/어 대다
keep on and on doing
Repetition to the point of irritation. One of the auxiliary verbs that colour an action rather than change it — and this one always colours it badly.

When to use it
The vowel follows the -아요/어요 rule: 울어 대다, 떠들어 대다, 먹어 대다, 웃어 대다.
It takes action verbs that can be repeated, and the judgement is always negative: the repetition is excessive, noisy, or wearing on the observer.
That negativity is a restriction, not a tendency. 열심히 공부해 댔다 sounds wrong, because studying hard is not something to complain about.
Compare -곤 하다, which reports a habit neutrally. -아/어 대다 is the speaker’s exasperation made grammatical.
How to attach it
| Stem type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Last vowel ㅏ or ㅗ | -아 대다 | 놀다 → 놀아 대다 |
| Any other vowel | -어 대다 | 떠들다 → 떠들어 대다 |
| 하다 verbs | 해 대다 | 불평해 대다 |
| Verbs | repeatable actions | 울다, 떠들다, 먹다, 웃다 |
| Judgement | always negative | 공부해 대다 is odd |
| Neutral habit | -곤 하다 | 가곤 했어요 |

Compared with
-곤 하다
-곤 하다 reports a habit with no judgement; -아/어 대다 complains about it.
가끔 울곤 했어요. (used to cry now and then) / 울어 댔어요. (bawled endlessly)
-아/어 내다
The two auxiliaries pull opposite ways. 내다 credits persistence through difficulty; 대다 condemns pointless repetition.
참아 냈어요. (bore it through) / 먹어 댔어요. (kept stuffing it down)
-아/어 버리다
버리다 marks a single action finished off; 대다 marks the same action done over and over.
다 먹어 버렸어요. (ate it all up) / 계속 먹어 댔어요. (kept eating and eating)
Watch out
그 학생은 밤늦게까지 공부해 댔다.
그 학생은 밤늦게까지 공부했다.
대다 carries disapproval. Attaching it to praiseworthy effort produces a contradiction.
그는 키가 커 댔다.
그는 키가 컸다.
The auxiliary takes repeatable action verbs. A state or a change cannot be done over and over.
아기가 한 번 울어 댔어요.
아기가 한참 울어 댔어요.
The whole point is repetition. A single instance leaves the auxiliary with nothing to do.
