TOPIK II · Level 5

-기에 충분하다

enough to, sufficient to

States that something meets a threshold. Another of the fixed -기 patterns, and the one you reach for when making a case.

Build it

Pick a verb

    설득하+-기에 충분하다

    stemending

    When to use it

Attach -기에 충분하다 to a verb stem — no vowel rule, ㄹ stays, no tense in front. The subject is the thing being measured, marked with 이/가.

The claim is that a threshold has been met: 그 증거만으로도 설득하기에 충분하다 — that evidence alone is enough to convince.

Because it asserts sufficiency, it belongs to argument — reviews, reports, editorials. It is the affirmative counterpart of -(으)ㄹ 소지가 있다, which flags a risk.

The negative -기에 충분하지 않다 is common too, and slightly gentler than saying something is inadequate outright.

    In use

    1. 그 증거만으로도 상대를 설득하기에 충분합니다.

That evidence alone is enough to convince the other side.

    2. 이 정도 자료면 결론을 내리기에 충분하다.

Material of this quality is sufficient to draw a conclusion.

    3. 한 시간이면 준비를 마치기에 충분해요.

An hour is enough to finish the preparations.

    4. 그의 성과는 주목받기에 충분한 것이었다.

His achievement was more than enough to draw notice.

    5. 재료가 열 개를 만들기에 충분하지 않습니다.

There aren’t enough ingredients to make ten.

    6. 이유를 설명하기에 충분한 시간이 없었다.

There was not time enough to explain why.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄹ 만하다

만하다 rates something as worth doing; 충분하다 states that a quantity or quality clears a bar. One recommends, the other measures.

볼 만해요. (worth watching)  /  설득하기에 충분하다. (enough to convince)

    • -(으)ㄹ 정도로

정도로 names a threshold to describe intensity; -기에 충분하다 asserts that the threshold is met.

놀랄 정도로 좋았다. (surprisingly good)  /  놀라기에 충분했다. (enough to surprise)

    • -(으)ㄹ 소지가 있다

The two work as a pair in argument: 소지가 있다 raises a risk, 충분하다 affirms sufficiency. Both are cautious, professional moves.

오해할 소지가 있다. (risk of misreading)  /  설득하기에 충분하다. (enough to convince)

    Watch out

    • 그 증거로 설득했기에 충분하다.

      그 증거로 설득하기에 충분하다.

-기 never carries tense. The threshold is stated in general terms.

    • 재료가 열 개를 만들기에 충분한다.

      재료가 열 개를 만들기에 충분하다.

충분하다 is an adjective, so the plain form is 충분하다, not 충분한다.

    • 설득하기에 충분한 근거가 있는 소지가 있다.

      설득하기에 충분한 근거가 있다.

충분하다 already asserts sufficiency. Adding 소지가 있다 hedges the same claim twice and contradicts it.
