no wonder; understandably

Acknowledges that someone’s reaction makes sense. One syllable from -(으)ㄹ 만하다, and the 도 changes the job entirely.

    When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 만도 하다. 만 takes a space after the modifier.

It is normally said about someone else’s reaction, granting that it is reasonable given the circumstances: 그렇게 기다렸으니 화가 날 만도 하지요.

The tone is sympathetic. It concedes a point on the other person’s behalf, often to defuse a situation.

A second use notes that something is overdue: 이제 올 만도 한데 — you’d expect them by now, and they haven’t come.

Having waited two hours, no wonder he’s cross.

After hearing that, it’s understandable she felt hurt.

It’s their first time, so a mistake is only to be expected.

After all that trouble you’d think he’d give up, yet he keeps going.

    Compared with

The 도 is doing all the work. 만하다 rates something as worth doing; 만도 하다 grants that a reaction is reasonable.

(worth watching)  /  화날 만도 해요. (no wonder he’s angry)

법하다 rates a claim as plausible; 만도 하다 sympathises with a reaction. Both hedge, in different directions.

(that could well be)  /  그럴 만도 해요. (no wonder)

법이다 asserts a general rule; 만도 하다 makes an allowance for one particular case.

(understandable this time)

    Watch out

— meaning “worth watching”

Adding 도 shifts the meaning to “no wonder.” For a recommendation, 만하다 alone is correct.

A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

The construction grants that someone else’s reaction is reasonable. Applied to yourself it sounds like self-justification.
