When to use it
Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 양으로. 양 is a noun and takes a space.
On spelling: the word is sometimes written 량으로, but standard orthography requires 양으로. After a space the initial ㄹ becomes ㅇ, as in 양심 and 요리.
The first clause names an intention held while acting: 놀라게 할 양으로 뒤에서 다가갔다. The purpose is usually private — something the actor meant, not something announced.
The register is literary and somewhat dated. Modern Korean says -(으)려고 or -(으)ㄹ 생각으로.

The modern equivalent, usable anywhere. 양으로 marks the sentence as literary or old-fashioned.

Very close, and rather more common. 요량 carries a slight sense of calculation, of having worked something out.

Standard orthography writes 양 here. The initial ㄹ becomes ㅇ after a space, as in 양심 and 요리.
