When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: adjectives take -(으)ㄴ 축에, verbs -는 축에. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 축 takes a space. 축에 들다 is an equally common variant.

There must be a comparison group in view, stated or understood: 이 가격이면 싼 축에 속합니다 — among things of this kind, that counts as cheap.

It is a hedge. Rather than saying something is cheap, you say it belongs with the cheap ones — which is harder to argue with.

Very close to -(으)ㄴ/는 편이다. 편이다 places it on a scale; 축에 속하다 places it in a group.

1. 이 가격이면 싼 축에 속합니다.

   At this price it counts as one of the cheap ones.

2. 우리 팀에서는 그가 일을 잘하는 축에 든다.

   On our team he’s among the ones who do good work.

3. 서른이면 아직 젊은 축에 속하지요.

   Thirty still counts as young.

4. 이 정도 소음이면 조용한 축에 듭니다.

   Noise at this level is on the quiet side of things.

5. 직접 만드는 곳은 이제 드문 축에 속한다.

   Places that make it themselves are now among the rare ones.

6. 경력으로 보면 오래된 축에 속하는 편이에요.

   In terms of experience she’s among the longer-serving.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄴ/는 편이다

  Both hedge. 편이다 places something on a scale — rather cheap; 축에 속하다 places it in a group — among the cheap ones.

  싼 편이에요. (fairly cheap)  /  싼 축에 속해요. (one of the cheaper ones)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다

  셈이다 says something amounts to a thing in effect; 축에 속하다 says it belongs with a group of them.

  다 한 셈이에요. (as good as finished)  /  빠른 축에 속해요. (among the fast ones)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 감이 있다

  감이 있다 hedges a criticism; 축에 속하다 hedges a classification. Both soften, for different reasons.

  비싼 감이 있어요. (feels a bit dear)  /  비싼 축에 속해요. (among the dearer ones)

Watch out

• 직접 만들는 곳은 드문 축에 속한다.

  직접 만드는 곳은 드문 축에 속한다.

  Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

• 이 가격이면 싼축에 속합니다.

  이 가격이면 싼 축에 속합니다.

  축 is a noun and takes a space after the modifier.

• 세계에서 가장 싼 축에 속합니다.

  세계에서 가장 쌉니다.

  The phrase hedges by placing something in a group. A superlative names one thing, so the hedge contradicts it.
