When to use it

Vowel stems take -ㅁ에 틀림없다, consonant stems -음에 틀림없다. Stems in ㄹ keep the ㄹ and add ㅁ: 만듦에 틀림없다. With a noun the form is 임에 틀림없다: 사실임에 틀림없다.

The claim is a confident inference, not a report of something witnessed. You are reasoning from evidence: 불이 켜져 있는 걸 보니 집에 있음에 틀림없다.

Because it is an inference, it does not suit facts you know first-hand. For those, a plain statement is correct.

The everyday equivalent is -(으)ㄴ/는 게 틀림없다 or 분명하다, which most speakers reach for in conversation.

1. 불이 켜져 있는 걸 보니 집에 있음에 틀림없다.

   The lights are on, so he must be home.

2. 필적을 보면 본인이 쓴 것임에 틀림없습니다.

   From the handwriting, there is no doubt he wrote it himself.

3. 이 정도 규모라면 오래 준비했음에 틀림없다.

   On this scale, they must have been preparing for a long time.

4. 그가 한 말은 사실임에 틀림없어요.

   What he said is undoubtedly true.

5. 맛을 보니 직접 만듦에 틀림없습니다.

   From the taste, it was certainly made by hand.

6. 이렇게 조용한 걸 보니 벌써 떠났음에 틀림없다.

   It’s so quiet — they must have left already.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다

  Opposite ends of the same scale. 리가 없다 rules a possibility out; 틀림없다 declares one certain.

  그럴 리가 없어요. (no way)  /  사실임에 틀림없어요. (certainly true)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 모양이다

  Both infer from evidence, but 모양이다 hedges while 틀림없다 commits. Same reasoning, different confidence.

  집에 있는 모양이에요. (seems to be home)  /  집에 있음에 틀림없다. (must be home)

• -는 게 틀림없다

  The everyday form of the same claim. 것 replaces the -(으)ㅁ nominaliser and the register drops accordingly.

  있음에 틀림없다. (writing)  /  있는 게 틀림없어요. (speech)

Watch out

• 제가 어제 갔음에 틀림없습니다.

  제가 어제 갔습니다.

  틀림없다 states an inference from evidence. Something you did yourself needs no inferring.

• 맛을 보니 직접 만들음에 틀림없습니다.

  맛을 보니 직접 만듦에 틀림없습니다.

  A ㄹ stem keeps the ㄹ and adds ㅁ, giving 만듦 rather than 만들음.

• 그가 한 말은 사실에 틀림없어요.

  그가 한 말은 사실임에 틀림없어요.

  A noun needs the copula 이다 nominalised as 임 before 에 틀림없다.
