When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 요량이다. 요량 is a noun and takes a space.

The intention is private and considered: 올해까지만 하고 그만둘 요량이다. You have worked it out, but you have not necessarily said so.

The form -(으)ㄹ 요량으로 makes it the purpose behind an action, exactly parallel to -(으)ㄹ 양으로 and rather commoner than it.

The register is literary. In speech, -(으)ㄹ 생각이다 or -(으)려고 하다 says the same thing.

How to attach it

In use

1. 올해까지만 하고 그만둘 요량입니다.

   I reckon on carrying on only until the end of this year.

2. 조용한 곳을 찾을 요량으로 시골로 내려갔다.

   Meaning to find somewhere quiet, he went down to the country.

3. 그는 처음부터 발을 뺄 요량이었던 듯하다.

   It seems he meant from the start to extricate himself.

4. 잠시 쉴 요량으로 앉았다가 그대로 잠이 들었다.

   He sat down meaning to rest a moment and fell asleep as he was.

5. 부품까지 직접 만들 요량이라면 시간이 넉넉해야 한다.

   If you reckon on making even the parts, you will need time to spare.

6. 값을 올릴 요량으로 물량을 조절했다는 의혹이 있다.

   There is suspicion that supply was managed with a view to raising prices.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 양으로

  Very close, and 요량으로 is the commoner of the two. 요량 adds a sense of having calculated; 양 is simply the intention.

  쉴 양으로 앉았다.  /  쉴 요량으로 앉았다.

• -(으)려고 하다

  The everyday form. -(으)려고 하다 states an intention plainly; 요량이다 marks it as considered and the sentence as literary.

  그만두려고 해요. (speech)  /  그만둘 요량이다. (writing)

• -(으)려던 참이다

  참이다 pins an intention to this very moment; 요량이다 describes a settled plan with no particular timing.

  나가려던 참이었어요. (just about to)  /  그만둘 요량이다. (that’s my plan)

Watch out

• 부품까지 직접 만들을 요량이라면 시간이 필요하다.

  부품까지 직접 만들 요량이라면 시간이 필요하다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 올해까지만 하고 그만둘요량입니다.

  올해까지만 하고 그만둘 요량입니다.

  요량 is a noun and takes a space after the modifier.

• 야, 나 그만둘 요량이야.

  야, 나 그만둘 생각이야.

  요량이다 is literary. In conversation, 생각이다 is the natural word.
