When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form. 게 is a contraction of 것이, so the fuller -(으)ㄹ 것이 뻔하다 is equally correct and slightly more formal.

The prediction is confident and usually unwelcome: 이대로 가면 실패할 게 뻔하다. You are not guessing but declaring the outcome evident.

The past form -았/었을 게 뻔하다 works the same way about something already over: 또 늦었을 게 뻔해요.

Adverbs 안 봐도 and 뻔하다시피 often reinforce it, and 불 보듯 뻔하다 is a set simile worth knowing.

1. 이대로 가면 실패할 게 뻔합니다.

   Carry on like this and failure is certain.

2. 안 봐도 또 늦었을 게 뻔해요.

   Without even looking, I’m sure he’s late again.

3. 그렇게 말하면 오해할 게 뻔하다.

   Put like that, it is bound to be misread.

4. 결과는 불 보듯 뻔한 일이었다.

   The outcome was as plain as day.

5. 서둘러 만들 게 뻔하니 품질은 기대하기 어렵다.

   They are bound to rush it, so quality is not to be hoped for.

6. 반대할 것이 뻔한데도 안건을 올렸다.

   He tabled the motion though objection was certain.

Compared with

• -(으)나 마나

  Close in feeling. 나 마나 says checking would tell you nothing; 게 뻔하다 states the outcome directly.

  보나 마나 늦을 거예요. (no need to look)  /  늦을 게 뻔해요. (he’s bound to be late)

• -기 십상이다

  십상이다 says something is likely to happen; 게 뻔하다 says it certainly will. Likelihood versus certainty.

  오해하기 십상이다. (easily misread)  /  오해할 게 뻔하다. (bound to be misread)

• -(으)ㄹ 소지가 있다

  The cautious end of the same scale. 소지가 있다 only notes that the conditions exist; 게 뻔하다 asserts the outcome.

  오해할 소지가 있습니다. (a risk)  /  오해할 게 뻔합니다. (a certainty)

Watch out

• 서둘러 만들을 게 뻔하다.

  서둘러 만들 게 뻔하다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 잘될 게 뻔하니 안심하세요.

  잘될 테니 안심하세요.

  뻔하다 predicts something unwelcome. For a reassuring forecast, -(으)ㄹ 테니 is natural.

• 어제 또 늦을 게 뻔했어요.

  어제 또 늦었을 게 뻔해요.

  For something already over, the past goes inside: -았/었을 게 뻔하다.
