When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 것도 없이. 것도 is 것 with the 도 that supplies the emphasis.

The action named was not needed, so it was skipped: 더 볼 것도 없이 그 자리에서 결정했다.

A few phrases dominate. 말할 것도 없이 means “needless to say”; 볼 것도 없이 and 생각할 것도 없이 mean the matter was obvious at once.

The predicate form -(으)ㄹ 것도 없다 works the same way: 그건 물어볼 것도 없어요.

   Needless to say, health matters most.

2. 더 볼 것도 없이 그 자리에서 결정했다.

   Without needing to look further, he decided on the spot.

3. 생각할 것도 없이 답은 정해져 있었다.

   There was no need to think; the answer was already fixed.

4. 그건 물어볼 것도 없어요.

   There’s no need even to ask about that.

5. 따로 만들 것도 없이 있는 재료로 해결했다.

   Without needing to make anything separately, we managed with what we had.

6. 망설일 것도 없이 손을 내밀었다.

   Without a moment’s hesitation, he held out his hand.

Compared with

• 말할 나위도 없다

  Same meaning, higher register. 나위도 없다 belongs to formal writing; 것도 없이 works anywhere.

  말할 것도 없이 (any register)  /  말할 나위도 없이 (formal)

• -(으)나 마나

  나 마나 says doing it would tell you nothing; 것도 없이 says it was skipped because unnecessary. Very close in practice.

  보나 마나 늦을 거예요. (no point looking)  /  볼 것도 없이 결정했다. (didn’t need to look)

• -은/는 물론이고

  물론이고 waves the first item through and adds a second; 말할 것도 없이 simply asserts the obvious.

  가격은 물론이고 품질도 좋다. (and moreover)  /  말할 것도 없이 중요하다. (obviously)

Watch out

• 따로 만들을 것도 없이 해결했다.

  따로 만들 것도 없이 해결했다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 말할 것도 없이 자세히 설명했다.

  말할 것도 없이 건강이 가장 중요하다.

  말할 것도 없이 introduces something too obvious to argue. A detailed explanation contradicts it.

• 더 볼 것 없이 결정했다.

  더 볼 것도 없이 결정했다.

  The 도 is what carries the emphasis and is expected here.
