다시 vs 또

again, over, back · again, once more; also

English uses “again” for both. 다시 means doing something over or going back to how it was; 또 simply means the same thing happens one more time — often with a hint of “not again!”.

How they differ

1. Redo vs repeat. When the first try failed or needs fixing, use 다시: 다시 써 주세요 (please write it again/correctly) ○ / 또 써 주세요 ✕. When the same event simply happens once more, use 또: 또 늦었어요 (you’re late again).

2. Going back = 다시. Returning to a previous state is only 다시: 다시 건강해졌어요 (I got healthy again), 다시 학교에 다녀요 (I’m back at school). 또 has no “back” meaning.

3. 또 can also mean “and also”. 싸고, 또 맛있어요 (It’s cheap, and also tasty). 다시 can’t add information like this. Both work in farewells: 또 만나요 ○ / 다시 만나요 ○ — 또 is more casual, 다시 sounds a bit more like “until we meet again”.
