How they differ

1. Watching and reading are always 보다. 영화를 봐요 ○ / 영화를 바라봐요 ✕. English speakers who split “see / look / watch” should know Korean uses one verb for all three. 보다 also covers 시험을 보다 (take an exam), 면접을 보다 (have an interview) and 입어 보다 (try on).

2. 바라보다 = a steady gaze, not an inspection. 창밖을 바라봐요 (gaze out the window) ○. For checking details, use 보다: 그림을 잘 보세요 ○ / 그림을 잘 바라보세요 △. It also works figuratively: 미래를 바라보다 (look to the future), 일흔을 바라보다 (be nearly seventy).

3. 쳐다보다 = aim your eyes at, often a person. 왜 쳐다봐요? (Why are you staring?) is a common, slightly confrontational line. Originally it means looking up: 하늘을 쳐다보다. Don’t use it for checking something: 숙제를 쳐다보다 ✕.

4. 바라보다 vs 쳐다보다. 바다를 바라봐요 ○ / 바다를 쳐다봐요 △: scenery you take in is 바라보다. A person who keeps staring at you: 계속 쳐다봐요 ◎, 계속 바라봐요 △ (sounds gentle, even romantic).
