When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들지라도. It is written as a single ending, and tense may appear inside: 갔을지라도.

The first clause supposes something adverse; the second states what holds regardless: 아무리 어려울지라도 포기하지 않겠습니다.

The adverb 아무리 or 비록 usually introduces it, exactly as with -더라도.

Against -(으)ㄹ지언정, which accepts a cost in order to refuse, this one simply concedes and carries on. The two look alike and are worth separating early.

1. 아무리 어려울지라도 포기하지 않겠습니다.

   However difficult it may be, I will not give up.

2. 비록 작을지라도 의미 있는 시작이다.

   Small though it may be, it is a meaningful beginning.

3. 결과가 좋지 않을지라도 시도할 가치는 있다.

   Even if the result is poor, the attempt is worth making.

4. 그가 이미 떠났을지라도 편지는 보내겠다.

   Even if he has already left, I shall send the letter.

5. 직접 만들지라도 품질을 낮출 수는 없다.

   Even making it ourselves, we cannot lower the quality.

6. 시간이 걸릴지라도 원칙대로 처리해야 합니다.

   However long it takes, it must be handled by the book.

Compared with

• -더라도

  Same meaning, everyday register. -더라도 works in speech; -(으)ㄹ지라도 marks the sentence as written or formal.

  힘들더라도 하세요. (speech)  /  어려울지라도 포기하지 않겠다. (writing)

• -(으)ㄹ지언정

  The pair to keep straight. 지라도 concedes and continues; 지언정 accepts a cost in order to refuse something.

  어려울지라도 하겠다. (I’ll do it anyway)  /  굶을지언정 받지 않겠다. (I’d sooner starve)

• -기로서니

  기로서니 concedes in order to rebuke; -(으)ㄹ지라도 concedes without any such edge.

  바쁘기로서니 연락도 못 하나? (reproach)  /  바쁠지라도 연락은 해야 한다. (statement)

Watch out

• 직접 만들을지라도 품질은 지켜야 한다.

  직접 만들지라도 품질은 지켜야 한다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 어려울지라도 굶지는 않겠다. — meaning “I’d sooner suffer than…”

  굶을지언정 손을 벌리지는 않겠다.

  To accept a cost in order to refuse something, the ending is -(으)ㄹ지언정.

• 야, 힘들지라도 해 봐.

  야, 힘들더라도 해 봐.

  -(으)ㄹ지라도 is a written form. In conversation, -더라도 is the natural choice.
