-(으)ㄴ/는 바에야

if it has come to this, then rather …

Accepts that a situation is already settled and draws a decisive conclusion from it. Close to -느니, but starting from a fact rather than a comparison.

    When to use it

The commonest form is -(으)ㄹ 바에야, built on the ㄹ short form. The completed -(으)ㄴ 바에야 also occurs. 바 is a noun and takes a space. The variant 바에는 is equally correct.

The first clause states a situation you are stuck with; the second draws a decisive conclusion, often something drastic: 이왕 할 바에야 제대로 하자.

The adverb 이왕 or 기왕 very often introduces it — “since it has come to this anyway.”

Do not confuse it with the plain -(으)ㄴ/는 바, which is a formal noun meaning “that which.” The 에야 turns it into a conditional.

    In use

    1. 이왕 할 바에야 제대로 합시다.

If we’re doing it at all, let’s do it properly.

    2. 기다릴 바에야 차라리 걸어가는 편이 낫겠다.

Rather than wait, I’d honestly sooner walk.

    3. 이렇게 살 바에야 처음부터 다시 시작하겠다.

If this is how it’s to be, I’d rather start over from scratch.

    4. 이미 시작한 바에야 끝까지 가 봐야지요.

Having started, we may as well see it through.

    5. 기왕 만들 바에야 좋은 재료를 씁시다.

If we’re making it anyway, let’s use good ingredients.

    6. 사과할 바에야 애초에 그러지 말았어야 했다.

If it was going to come to an apology, he shouldn’t have done it in the first place.

    Compared with

    • -느니

-느니 weighs two options directly; -(으)ㄹ 바에야 starts from a situation already accepted and then concludes. Often interchangeable.

기다리느니 걷겠다.  /  기다릴 바에야 걷겠다.

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 이상

이상 takes a settled fact and states an obligation; 바에야 takes one and states a preference or a resolve.

시작한 이상 끝내야 한다. (must)  /  시작한 바에야 끝까지 가 보자. (may as well)

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 바

Same noun, unrelated job. 바 alone is a formal nominaliser; 바에야 is a conditional connective.

아는 바가 없다. (I know nothing)  /  할 바에야 제대로 하자. (if we’re doing it)

    Watch out

    • 이왕 할 바에야 날씨가 좋네요.

      이왕 할 바에야 제대로 합시다.

The second clause has to draw a conclusion from the situation. An unrelated remark leaves it hanging.

    • 기왕 만들을 바에야 좋은 재료를 씁시다.

기왕 만들 바에야 좋은 재료를 씁시다.

A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

    • 제가 아는 바에야 그런 계획은 없습니다.

제가 아는 바로는 그런 계획은 없습니다.

To mean “as far as I know,” the form is 아는 바로는. 바에야 is a conditional.
