    When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 바, completed actions -(으)ㄴ 바. Stems in ㄹ drop it — 알다 gives 아는 바. 바 is a noun and takes a space.

Three patterns cover most uses. As a noun phrase: 제가 아는 바로는, 느낀 바가 많다. With 있다/없다: 들은 바 없습니다. And as -(으)ㄴ 바와 같이, meaning “as stated above.”

A fourth use links two clauses as a formal connective: 검토한바 문제가 없었습니다 — here it is written joined, and belongs to legal and official prose.

Do not confuse it with -(으)ㄹ 바에야, a separate construction meaning “rather than.”

    Compared with

    • 것 is the everyday nominaliser; 바 is its formal counterpart. Substituting one for the other changes only the register.

아는 것이 없어요. (speech)  /  아는 바가 없습니다. (formal)

    • -다시피

Both can mean “as you know,” but -다시피 is an ending attached to a verb, while -(으)ㄴ 바와 같이 is a noun phrase.

      아시다시피  /  말씀드린 바와 같이

    • -(으)ㄹ 바에야

A separate construction sharing the same noun. It means “rather than,” close to -느니.

아는 바가 없다. (I know nothing)  /  기다릴 바에야 걷겠다. (rather than wait)

    Watch out

    • 제가 알는 바로는 아직 결정되지 않았습니다.

제가 아는 바로는 아직 결정되지 않았습니다.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

    • 그 건에 대해서는 들은바 없습니다.

그 건에 대해서는 들은 바 없습니다.

As a noun phrase, 바 takes a space. It is written joined only in the formal connective use, as in 검토한바.

    • 야, 내가 아는 바로는 걔 안 와.

      야, 내가 알기로는 걔 안 와.

바 belongs to formal registers. In casual speech, 알기로는 or 아는 걸로는 is natural.
