When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 양이면.

On spelling: the word is often written 량이면, but standard orthography requires 양이면. Following a space, the initial ㄹ becomes ㅇ under the initial-sound rule, as in 양심 and 요리.

The first clause names an intention; the second states what it demands: 기왕 할 양이면 제대로 해야 한다.

It overlaps heavily with -(으)ㄹ 바에야, and both take 이왕 or 기왕. 양이면 is the more archaic of the two and is rare outside older prose.

2. 떠날 양이면 미리 알려 주게.

   If you mean to leave, let me know beforehand.

3. 이 길을 갈 양이면 각오를 단단히 해야 한다.

   If you intend to take this road, you must steel yourself.

4. 부탁할 양이면 사정이라도 설명해야지.

   If you’re going to ask a favour, you might at least explain yourself.

5. 직접 만들 양이면 재료부터 골라야 한다.

   If you mean to make it yourself, you must start by choosing the ingredients.

6. 끝까지 갈 양이면 지금 결정하시오.

   If you intend to see it through, decide now.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 바에야

  Very close. 바에야 starts from a situation already accepted; 양이면 starts from an intention. Both take 이왕 and 기왕, and 바에야 is far more common today.

  기왕 할 바에야 제대로 하자.  /  기왕 할 양이면 제대로 해야 한다.

• -(으)려면

  The modern equivalent. -(으)려면 says exactly the same thing in ordinary Korean.

  하려면 제대로 하세요. (speech)  /  할 양이면 제대로 해야 한다. (older prose)

• -(으)ㄴ/는 양

  Same noun 양, unrelated construction. That one describes a pretence; this one sets a condition.

  아는 양했다. (pretended to know)  /  할 양이면 (if you mean to do it)

  기왕 할 양이면 제대로 해야 한다.

  직접 만들 양이면 재료부터 골라야 한다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 야, 갈 양이면 지금 가.

  야, 갈 거면 지금 가.

  양이면 is archaic. In conversation, -(으)려면 or -(으)ㄹ 거면 is what people say.
