When to use it
The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 가운데, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 가운데. With a noun it attaches directly: 어둠 가운데. Stems in ㄹ drop it.
Unlike -는 동안, which measures a stretch of time, 가운데 describes surrounding conditions. The two clauses may have different subjects, and usually do.
It is firmly written. Headlines and reports use it constantly: 비가 내리는 가운데 행사가 진행되었다.
The same word 가운데 also means “among” or “the middle” in ordinary use: 셋 가운데 하나. Context separates them without difficulty.
